Picture book lesson plans and activities for busy teachers
Home › Forums › START HERE – Welcome › Hi. I’m Shari
Hi. I’m Shari Helene. I’m a K-5 ESL teacher in New Jersey. 2019-2020 was my 30th year as an ESL teacher in public schools. ESL is no longer truly ESL; it has been integrated into ELA to a great extent. This is fine for the more proficient students, but the newcomers still need basic ESL instruction. Picture books are a good way to reach both groups, so I look forward to using much of the material found here. I can not pick a favorite picture book – too many that I love! I have been working with The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau by Dan Yaccarino for my fourth graders! My kindergarteners have been enjoying a bunch of Elmer books by David McKee that I happened to have at home! We have been meeting on zoom and moving forward! Stay safe!! Thanks!
Hi Shari!
Welcome! This is why I love this community. I’m already hearing about new picture books! I haven’t heard of that Yaccarino title! Have you heard of Manfish? It’s also about Jacques Cousteau? I’ll add that lesson plan next so you can use it if you’re interested.
I totally agree with you about ESL. I’m a bilingual teacher and ESL was separate for us for many years and taught by an ESL teacher, but now we bilingual teachers have had to take that on and we share an ESL teacher among 2 buildings and mostly for newcomers.
Welcome!
Josh
